A Day to Remember: Reflecting on Two Powerful Events and the Amazing People Behind Them

Yesterday was an unforgettable day, one filled with connection, inspiration, and a deep sense of community. It wasn’t just about the events themselves, but about the people who brought them to life. These two powerful events were more than just celebrations; they were a call for change, a shared moment of reflection, and a testament to the incredible energy of those who came together.

The day began with the Can I Just Write book signing and reading event, and it was truly something special. From the beautifully curated catering experience provided by Kimberly Winborne of Design Evolution Creations and Kimberly McGhee of The Management Firm, to the carefully chosen decor and the historical significance of the St. Matthew Rosenwald School, everything came together seamlessly. The space was alive with laughter, warmth, and a collective sense of purpose. People came together from all walks of life, some meeting for the first time, others reconnecting after many years, but what stood out the most was the shared desire to create change and make an impact.

A special thanks to Kenia Thompson, of PBS NC’s Black Issues Forum and the creator of WordCRUMBS, for serving as our official host. Her leadership and grace set the tone for an engaging and insightful discussion. We were also honored to hear from Dr. Brian L. Carroll, whose expertise and guidance in the formatting, editing, and design of the book played an instrumental role in bringing Can I Just Write to life, and The Honorable David K. Baker, Sr., who reflected on his personal journey and experience with the book, sharing why he chose to be a part of this meaningful project. Their words not only added depth to the event but highlighted the true power of community and shared commitment.

For those who couldn’t attend in person, we’ve captured many of the special moments in video and photos, and we invite you to bask in the warmth of the energy shared that day. This celebration was not just about the book but about a collective mission of spreading love, healing, and growth through shared experiences.

The second event, Speak Your Peace, was equally impactful. Hosted in part by The House of Creatives, this event brought together people from various backgrounds to share their voices and creative expressions. Poetry from Can I Just Write was read, and many others participated in an open space to perform spoken word, recite poems, and engage in powerful creative expression. It was an opportunity for people who may not have traditionally come together to unite and create a peaceful atmosphere, allowing everyone to share their truths through art.

Yesterday was a reminder that we are all capable of great things when we unite with intention. It was a day that showed us the importance of community, the power of shared narratives, and the incredible potential of coming together to elevate one another.
