Black History Is American History: Celebrating Extraordinary Individuals

Won’t it be wonderful when Black history and Native American history and Jewish history and all of U.S. history is taught from one book. Just U.S. history.
— Dr. Maya Angelou

As we step into February, we embrace the commencement of Black History Month, an annual celebration rooted in the United States, also recognized as African-American History Month. This cherished observance has garnered official acknowledgment from governments in the United States and Canada, and more recently, has been embraced in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

This month serves as a poignant reminder to honor the profound narratives, tireless endeavors, remarkable achievements, and invaluable contributions made by Black Americans, often overlooked or underappreciated. It's an integral part of American History, intricately woven into the fabric of our collective story.

Join us on this journey as we pause to pay tribute to some of the unsung heroes whose remarkable legacies deserve celebration and recognition. Together, let's delve into the rich tapestry of Black history and amplify voices that have shaped our shared human experience.

Let us also acknowledge a few other national days in February that beautifully echo the spirit of togetherness and inclusive thinking, mirroring the essence of Black History as American History:

Shine a Light on Slavery Day on February 13 serves as a poignant reminder to shed light on the dark shadows of history, fostering awareness and understanding to combat modern-day injustices.

On February 17, Random Act of Kindness Day encourages us to spread compassion and generosity, reflecting the values of empathy and unity essential in the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice.

February 20 marks the World Day of Social Justice, emphasizing the global imperative of creating a fair and equitable society for all, resonating deeply with the principles championed during Black History Month.

Together, these observances reinforce the interconnectedness of our shared humanity and the importance of collective efforts in building a more inclusive and just world. Let us honor these days with reflection, action, and a commitment to advancing the ideals of equality and solidarity.

Extraordinary Individuals

Reverend Phillip Brickle was born in New Rochelle, New York, where he attended high school. He came to North Carolina on a football scholarship at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC. He received his Associate Degree in Theology from Raleigh Institute of Biblical Studies in Raleigh, NC. Reverend Brickle was ordained on November 16, 2001, by the Wake County Baptist Association.

Reverend Brickle is the Founder and President of Lost Sheep Outreach Ministry in Raleigh, NC. Lost Sheep Outreach Ministry has evolved over the past twenty-year period. Its inception came about as a result of Reverend Ron Collier and Brother Phil Brickle discussing the needs of the homeless and less fortunate one autumn afternoon. Both had a burning desire to meet the physical and spiritual needs of the community of forgotten persons. They realized those persons were precious to God and had a need for food, clothing, shelter, and spiritual guidance, which motivated them to start an outreach ministry. With the support of Mother Melvina Blalock, a missionary from Elevation Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC, that was the birth of the ministry. With a pot of chili, they headed to Moore's Square Park to feed the hungry and found that the line was longer than the pot of chili. Brother Brickle prayed for Churches, Ministries, and the community to help him fulfill the vision and mission that God had given him and received a strong core of believers in Jesus Christ with talents, gifts, and a passion for outreach. This core of believers comes from many different churches within a forty-mile radius of Raleigh, NC. In the summer of 2005, the ministry was enlarged, and it became a non-profit organization.

This is a summary of Lost Sheep Outreach Ministry activities:

• Holy Ghost Block Parties

• Coats, hats, gloves, and blankets giveaways

• Back to School Celebration

• Thanksgiving Dinner Celebration

• Gift Wrapping Celebration in preparation for our Christmas Celebration

• Christmas Celebration with presentation gifts

Some of these activities are held outside the city of Raleigh and Wake County (Holly Springs, Garner, Clinton, Durham, Greensboro, and Charlotte) and even outside of North Carolina in the state of Arkansas.

At these events:

• We gave away tons of clothes which included shoes

• We fed thousands of People

• We gave away thousands of Backpacks filled with school supplies

• We gave away hygiene items until we ran out

• We had Gospel singers, Praise dancers, a Word from God, a Beauty school that does nails and facials, and barbers to cut hair and medical teams that do different medical checks

Our Bible Study Services are held on Monday Nights at 7:00 PM at The Gathering Place, 3500 Woodmeadow Parkway Raleigh, NC.

Our Monday night attendance consists of both adults and children; we average 45 saints each Monday night.

We have received hundreds of written requests for prayer; this does not include those requests that are made after services end. There have been several who have come to the altar for salvation or rededication. We make ourselves available to partner with churches, ministries, businesses, and any community organization that has the passion that is near and dear to our hearts.
