Voter Education Is Necessary: Meet Ricky Phillips
Ricky Phillips, Voter Education Consultant and Community Specialist
Ricky Phillips is a Brew Master, community outreach specialist, husband, father, and brother. Growing up in the rural town of Snow Hill, NC taught Ricky the importance of family and community. After graduating from high school he attended NC State University where he was very active on campus. In his sophomore year, he was a co-founder of Men Against Rape and Rape Culture and worked for hand in hand with other organizations to fight against discrimination and sexual assault. He graduated with a degree in sociology with a concentration in inequality and social structure. Throughout his professional career, he has picked up certifications in Safe Zone (LGBTQ+ awareness), Mental Health First Aid, and Green Zone (Military Veterans Aid). Through his professional career in aiding students from underrepresented backgrounds, Ricky began to see the importance of being vocal in the political realm. As he began to engage more with the political side of the community, he realized that it was just as important as the social sphere. He then began to learn more about local and national politics and searched for ways to have a larger impact. He is currently striving to someday hold a local position to speak out for those whose voice has not been heard. Until then you can find Ricky sharing his love of beer and fermentation on his YouTube channel, Fantastic Fermentations, and leading conversations in his community around race and social justice. His active role in the community has equipped him with the skills to navigate tough social and political conversations, all while drinking a good beer.
