Reflections on the Inter-Community Passover Seder Experience

My journey with faith and belonging to the Holy Springs Interfaith Alliance has given me a profound understanding of the Passover Seder's essence and significance. Like a timeless melody, its elements carry variations and nuances that weave a tapestry of history, culture, and sacredness spanning over 3000 years.

A few friends and I attended the Inter-Community Seder hosted by the Jewish Federation of Greater Raleigh and it was an awe-inspiring experience. The way they unveiled the Passover story and Seder traditions reshaped my perception of communal fellowship, nourishing meals, and the art of storytelling. Whether it was the engaging exercises led by our Table Leader and Creative Arts Trauma Therapist, Barbara Kaynan, or the soul-stirring correlation between the Biblical Israelites and the struggles for freedom and justice today, accompanied by the heartfelt vocalizations of Mary D. Williams, every moment felt imbued with a profound resonance.

The foundation of "universal values of faith, freedom, justice, resilience, and hope" as advocated by the Jewish Federation of Greater Raleigh resonated deeply within me. It wasn't just about sharing my own narrative; it was about immersing myself in the experiences of others. At Table 11, I encountered a diverse group passionately dedicated to these shared values, be it through personal journeys, professional endeavors, or a harmonious blend of both. Hearing their stories ignited a spark, urging me to step beyond my comfort zone and do more for our collective well-being.

One striking example is the impactful work of L’Arche North Carolina, spearheaded by Laura Lorino and Tatum Tricarico, where inclusivity thrives, empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities. Then there's Cheryl Williams, a direct descendant of the historic Oberlin Community, whose dedication led to the formation of the Historic Turner House Foundation, preserving the rich narratives of Oberlin Village's inhabitants for over a decade.

Mayor Baldwin's words, "now is the time to have some tough conversations," lingered in my mind. It's not just a momentary call; it's a perpetual invitation to embrace empathy and understanding. What if every encounter, like our Seder gathering, became a catalyst for intentional choices and value-added connections? How many of us truly take the time to cherish and support those we know?

As someone committed to fostering togetherness initiatives, I'm reevaluating our approaches at Love Is A Parable. While food and music remain integral, I'm exploring deeper into the essence of community and the power of shared experiences. Everyone has a narrative; the question is, are we willing to listen? Are we ready to champion the values of faith, freedom, justice, resilience, and hope for all, valuing what's sacred to each individual?

Reflecting on this experience, I'm not only reshaping our initiatives but also challenging myself to embody these values more authentically. The 'order' of my service is evolving, rooted in inclusivity and intentionality, transcending divisive barriers and embracing unity with open arms.
